The gods needed to give light to the world. By sacrificing two of them, they created the sun, and the moon. But thy didnt move. They needed one last sacrifice. And the chosen one was Xolotl. Xolotl did not want to die. But he was chosen to be sacrificed. Instead, he ran away, and morphed into an animal, the axolotl, to hide and survive.
