Bought this in alpha in 2010 for about ten euros and it is, by an enormous margin, the best value I have ever got from a piece of software.
What's remarkable isn't the building, it's that the core loop has survived fifteen years of additions without being broken. You still punch a tree. You still panic at dusk on night one. Everything they've layered on top — villages, the Nether rework, archaeology — is optional in a way that a lesser design would not have allowed, and a world generated today still plays like a world generated in 2011 if you want it to.
The sound design is the underrated part. C418's work is half of why the game feels lonely in the right way, and the ambient cave noises have frightened more people than most horror games have.
Still playing it. Still the same world from 2013. An S with no reservations.
