Portal 1 is three hours long, has no story to speak of, and I think it's the better game.
The first one is a puzzle game with an unsettling presence at the edges. You're in a test facility, something is wrong, and the horror of it accumulates from what isn't said. Portal 2 answers all of those questions. It gives you a backstory, a corporate history, a villain with an arc, and every answer it provides makes the place smaller. Aperture was frightening when it was inexplicable.
The puzzles are also, per minute, easier. Portal 2 has more mechanics and asks less of you with them — the gels look complex and mostly have one obvious application per room.
It's a better production and a lesser game. A B, which for a game I'd still recommend to anyone is not an insult, just an argument about which of the two is actually the achievement.
